About

#YouthAriseSA started at a discussion held at the United Front Western Cape’s Co-ordinating Committee meeting in May 2017.  The need was identified to form a youth movement that will address the current economic and social issues that are faced by youth in our communities.  A number of organisation’s then got together and planned a June 16th event in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, that was attended by youth from across the Province.  The event was very successful and we had +-300 youth present.  Many issues was identified and discussed, for example:

  • Youth and unemployment
  • Data must fall
  • Land and housing
  • Gender-based violence

Out of this collaboration of organisations and community formations, we decided to build the youth movement that can take on the issues arising out of the event to implementation in the various communities.  This has given rise to #YouthAriseSA, where a steering committee of volunteers were elected at a gathering of +- 80 youth representatives from 16 communities in the Western Cape were elected to take the movement forward.

A coordinating committee was elected as follows:

  • Corine Solomon (Westlake Community) – Chairperson
  • Alfredo Papers Booysen (Paarl Community) – Vice-Chairperson
  • Zandile Manuel (Nyanga Community) – Treasurer
  • Sizwe Manqele (Khayelitsha Community) – Secretary

We have had our first leaders camp on the 19/20 August 2017, where we made plans to take the movement forward. We are planning to conduct youth dialogues in various communities that will assist to start small manageable projects empowering the youth in our communities.

We want to encourage youth to join us to build the communities that we want in our life time!
